How Close is Jesus?

One year ago this month I found myself longing for one word—“here.” You see, on June 6, 2015, my oldest daughter Reagan and I went to the local BMV and came home with her official driver’s license. She was now legal to drive alone. So of course she wanted to go somewhere, ANYWHERE that very day.

My stomach churned and my heart ached watching her head out of the driveway on her own, knowing that it was the first of many, many times ahead.

While most of the time I can’t stand the girls’ cell phones and all the wasted time they spend on them, this is one situation where I can honestly say that I LOVE the phone. We try to give Reagan a decent amount of freedom because she IS a senior and almost 18, and we’d much rather her fail when we can be here to pick her up than have those first big mistakes that we all make be far from home. But one thing I DO ask is that wherever she goes, she simply texts me the word “here” so that I know she has arrived safe and sound.

It’s funny how even though I’m pretty laid back about her driving now a year later (she’s proved her carefulness so far), I still find that a part of me has been holding my breath up until I read that one word on my phone. There is an unexpected exhale of relief and feeling of peace that washes over me every time.

I can’t see her, but I’m still connected to her. She is only a text or phone call away.

After several months of seeing “here” on my phone, I started really thinking about that word and I realized that it’s the same word that Jesus is always saying to me.

When I’m feeling alone and far from God’s presence, Jesus is quickly saying, “here.”

  • “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Revelation 3:20 NIV)

  • “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18 NASB)

  • “For what great nation is there that has a god near to it as the Lord our God is to us whenever we call to Him?” (Deuteronomy 4:7 HCSB)

When I’m afraid or hurting and need someone’s arms to wrap around me, Jesus lovingly whispers, “here.”

  • “For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” (Zephaniah 3:17 NLT)

  • “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” (Psalm 34:18 NLT)

  • “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for You are close beside me. Your rod and Your staff protect and comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4 NLT)

  • “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14 HCSB)

When the trials of this life get me down and I think that there HAS to be more than this, Jesus reminds me of His promise, “here.”

  • “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also.” (John 14:2-3 HCSB)

  • “And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20b NLT)

Talk about an exhale of relief and a feeling of peace washing over me! I may not be able to see Jesus face to face right now, but I DO see His presence all around me and I can be connected to Him every moment of every day.

So can you. He is only a prayer away.
